DO I HAVE SLEEP APNEA? →

Sleep Apnea

What is Sleep Apnea?

Are you troubled by snoring, or does your partner’s snoring disrupt your sleep? Is your partner waking up gasping for breath?

Sleep apnea, a significant sleep disorder, is characterized by repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep.

At Frederick TMJ & Sleep, we understand that these breathing pauses cause the brain to wake the body briefly to resume breathing, disrupting the sleep cycle. This frequent disturbance prevents reaching the crucial deep sleep necessary for complete rejuvenation.

Left unchecked, sleep apnea can contribute to several severe health issues over time, such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, and mood disorders. If you’re experiencing loud snoring and persistent fatigue despite adequate sleep, it might be an indication of sleep apnea.

There are two primary types of sleep apnea:

  1. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): This common form occurs when throat muscles relax excessively, leading to a blocked airway.
  2. Central Sleep Apnea (CSA): This type happens when the brain fails to send the correct signals to the muscles controlling breathing.

If you suspect you have sleep apnea, early testing is crucial. At Frederick TMJ & Sleep (FTS), we carefully screen patients and collaborate with area physicians. Many of these medical professionals specialize in sleep disorders and can provide Sleep Testing, diagnosis, and determine the type and degree of the sleep disorder.
