When to Visit a Dentist for TMJ Therapy

Your Journey to Relief Begins Here

If you or a loved one is experiencing symptoms of TMD or tenderness and pain in the face, neck or jaw area, it’s important to have it examined to determine the exact root of the pain. The dentist will check the bite and movement of the jaw joints, while listening for any unusual sounds like popping or clicking.

The dentist will also examine the muscles of the head and neck for any signs of tightness or tenderness. X-rays may also be necessary to get a thorough look at the jaw joints and to make sure that there aren’t any other underlying problems occurring.

Dr. Rogers, who is also a sleep apnea dentist, can help you determine if your symptoms may also be related to a sleep disorder and provide you treatment if necessary.

How do you treat TMJ disorder (TMD)?

Frederick TMJ & Sleep specializes in a range of effective treatments to alleviate the pain associated with Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD). Dr. Rogers provides personalized care to address your unique symptoms and concerns.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Rogers will conduct a thorough examination and engage in a detailed discussion about your symptoms. This comprehensive approach enables us to determine the most suitable and effective treatment plan for your specific needs.

In most cases, we successfully manage TMJ-related pain and discomfort without resorting to surgery. Our non-invasive treatment options may include:

TMJ Splints: They look and feel like a traditional customized night guard but they are much different. TMJ splints are carefully adjusted, over a period of weeks and months, and help to determine the cause of pain and dysfunction.

Medication: Utilizing anti-inflammatory medications and muscle relaxers to alleviate acute pain and reduce inflammation associated with TMD.

Therapeutic Botox: BOTOX® can be used to help mitigate facial pain as well as prevent headaches and migraines. This can be especially helpful for patients suffering from a TMJ disorder. This can be especially helpful for selected patients suffering from a TMJ disorder. If indicated, Dr Rogers will refer to a qualified provider with specific instructions on where it may be beneficial

Physical Therapy: Physical therapy by a qualified physical therapist may be necessary to help remobilize the joints and muscles.

Dental Solutions: Personalized dental work to address issues related to missing teeth or a poor bite alignment.

While surgery is an extremely rare recommendation, Dr. Rogers will consider it only in cases where other treatments prove ineffective. The well-being and comfort of our patients are our top priorities, and we explore surgical options only when necessary.
